Cal U Men’s Soccer knocks off Bloomsburg in overtime

Facing a two-goal deficit early in the second half, the Vulcans scored in the 102nd minute during the second overtime to outlast Bloomsburg for a 4-3 victory in Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) action on Saturday afternoon. With the win, the California University of Pennsylvania men’s soccer team improves to 4-3 overall with a 2-2 record in league play. Meanwhile, the Huskies drop to 7-2 overall with a 4-2 mark in conference action. The Vulcans recorded the first goal of the contest when freshman Eric Campbell (Erie, Pa./Harbor Creek) posted his second goal of the season off an assist from senior Lubos Kubik (Pardubice, Czech Republic/Roosevelt (Iowa)). Bloomsburg quickly responded with goals at the 23:14-mark and in the 29th minute to take a 2-1 lead.
Bloomsburg started the second half with a goal at the 45:14-mark from Austin Transue, his second of the game, to increase the lead to 3-1. Cal U responded in the 69th minute with a goal from freshman Mike Cummings (McDonald, Pa./West Allegheny) off an assist from senior Jesse Scheirer (Venitia, Pa./Peters Township) before Scheirer tied the game at 3-3 with an unassisted goal at the 81:22-mark. The Huskies took both of the shots attempted in the first overtime period. The Vulcans struck early in the second overtime period during the 102nd minute off the foot of Campbell, which was his second of the game, to claim the victory. Freshman goalkeeper Lucas Exner (Horstmar, Germany/Pascal-Gymnasium) posted five saves in the win. Cal U held a slim 19-17 advantage in shots, while each team tallied five corner kicks. The Vulcans return to action this weekend as they travel to East Striudsburg and then return home for a Sunday Contest against Davis & Elkins.
