Cal U women’s basketball team rolls past Fairmont State, 96-66

CALIFORNIA (Nov.18) – Junior transfer Dejah Terrell (Reading, Pa./Berks Catholic) scored a season-high 33 points to pace four players in double figures, as the California University of Pennsylvania women’s basketball team collected a 96-66 victory over Fairmont State on Thursday evening in non-conference action at the Convocation Center.
Win the win, the Vulcans improve to 3-0 overall while playing their first home game in 625 days. Meanwhile the Fighting Falcons fall to 1-2 this season under third-year head coach Stephanie (Michael) Anderson, who played for Cal U from 2010-13.
Terrell registered a consecutive double-double with 33 points (22 first half) and a season-high 11 rebounds (five offensive). She finished the game shooting 13-of-13 from the field and seven-of-nine from the free-throw line and added three blocks while playing 30 minutes on Thursday. A transfer from Albright, Terrell scored a career-high 41 points against Messiah in January 2020.
Fellow junior Brionna Allen (Pittsburgh, Pa./Bishop Canevin) scored 15 points on five-of-nine from the floor and five-of-six from the charity stripe, plus collected three rebounds and two blocks. Junior transfer Ciaira Loyd (Scranton, Pa./Scranton) recorded a doubled-double with 13 points and 10 assists, while sophomore Olivia Hudson (Altoona, Pa./Altoona) finished with 12 points and six rebounds in the victory.
In the final six minutes of the first quarter, Cal U mounted a 22-5 run with Allen and Terrell combining for 14 points and the Vulcans shooting 10-of-11 from the field to hold a 30-13 lead at the end of the quarter. The Fighting Falcons started the second quarter on a 9-5 run to trail 35-22 with seven minutes remaining. After a three pointer from Allen, the Vulcans countered with a 7-4 run to extend their lead to 44-26 with just under four minutes remaining. Fairmont State mounted a 9-6 run in the remaining minutes of the half, as Cal U lead 50-35 at the half.
The Vulcans started the third quarter by scoring seven of 11 points and forced the Fighting Falcons into a pair of turnovers to take a 57-39 advantage. Fairmont State scored five of the next nine points to cut the deficit to 61-44 before Cal U mounted an 8-2 run led by Hudson and Terrell to extend the lead to 69-46 with 2:30 remaining. The teams traded the next 12 points with the Vulcans leading 75-52 after three quarters. Cal U began the fourth quarter by scoring the opening eight points on layups from Hudson before Fairmont State countered with a 7-6 run to trail 89-59 with 3:28 to play. Cal U scored six of 11 points to take a 95-64 advantage and captured the home victory.
The Vulcans finished the game shooting 59.7 percent (37-of-62) from the field and 76.0 percent (19-of-25) from the charity stripe. In comparison, Fairmont State made 39.3 percent (22-of-56) from the floor and went 8-of-16 (50.0 percent) from beyond the arc. Cal U held a 44-21 rebound advantage behind 13 offensive rebounds and forced Fairmont State into 17 turnovers.
Fairmont State redshirt senior Jertaya Hall and sophomore Alyssa Deangelo each paced the team with 15 points, while redshirt senior Kamrin Weimer added 12 points on four-of-five beyond the arc.
Cal U returns to action on Monday, Nov. 22, when it hosts Central State (Ohio) in non-conference action at the Convocation Center with tip-off set for 6 p.m.
