Director of Internships and Experiential Education at PennWest California, Meaghan Clister, explains that PennWest has a career network group of almost 3,000 members on LinkedIn, a group that allows students to connect with alumni for job advice and opportunities.

Clister says that professional headshots are critical for your account because many employers will look up a potential candidate’s LinkedIn profile before offering a position or interviewing, and a professional headshot creates a strong first impression by making you look credible.

According to LinkedIn, profiles with headshots get 21 times more views than those without headshots and 36 times more messages. Most importantly, it is an excellent way for college students to promote their brand to potential employers, and including your face is crucial to give a human connection.

The PennWest Career Center offers appointments to help students create LinkedIn profiles.

Students coming to take headshots should wear professional attire. Clister explains that what is considered professional attire depends on the career field, but attire such as a suit, dress shirt and tie, blouse, or a nice sweater is recommended. If you are still unsure what to wear, the career center has resources describing professional attire on their website. Students seeking professional attire for free to wear for the headshot or job interviews can schedule an appointment with the Career Center through Handshake or visit the Career Center office in the Natali Student Center.

Clister also recommends a genuine natural smile as employers respond more effectively to natural smiles.
