This past Sunday, Feb. 9, The Philadelphia Eagles (18-3) defeated the Kansas City Chiefs (17-3) by a score of 40-22 to secure their second Super Bowl victory, while also preventing the Chiefs from gaining their third Super Bowl win in the past three years. This Super Bowl was also the most-watched Super Bowl of all time, garnering around 128 million viewers.
This game was marked by dominance from the Eagles, and that started in the first half. The first quarter of the game started slowly, with the only scoring of the quarter coming from the Eagles with a 1-yard-Jalen-Hurts rushing touchdown with 6 minutes left.
The second quarter started with Jalen Hurts throwing an interception, which was the first turnover of the game that could’ve sparked the Chiefs to get the ball moving, but unfortunately for the Chiefs, they had one of their worst quarters in the past three years. They got nothing from the interception and ended up giving the ball back to the Eagles who scored a field goal, making the score 10-0 for the Eagles. Immediately after, Chiefs Quarterback Patrick Mahomes threw an interception to rookie Cooper DeJean, who ended up returning the interception for a touchdown, increasing the score even further to 17-0. The Eagles’ defense did not stop, as they prevented the Chiefs from getting another yard for the rest of the half, and also intercepted Patrick Mahomes a second time, which allowed them to score another touchdown and enter halftime with a lead of 24-0 on the defending two-time champion. In the first half, the Chiefs only had a net gain of 13 yards, which is one of the lowest in a Super Bowl game.
As always, there was a half-time performance for the Super Bowl, with this year’s being led by rapper Kendrick Lamar. This performance also guest-starred Samuel L. Jackson, SZA, and Serena Williams. The songs he performed include: “squabble up”, “HUMBLE”, “DNA”, “euphoria”, “man at the garden”, “peekaboo”, “luther” (featuring SZA), “All the Stars” (featuring SZA), “Not Like Us”, and “tv off”. Most of these songs reign from Lamar’s latest album, “GNX”, but there are some outliers, like songs from “DAMN”, the “Black Panther” soundtrack, and his diss songs on fellow rapper Drake.
The second half of the game was better for the Chiefs, but the Eagles never took their foot off the gas pedal. The Chiefs finally scored their first touchdown of the game with only 34 seconds left in the third quarter, making the game 34-6 for the Eagles and rendering a comeback very improbable. The Eagles kept scoring, taking the lead as big as 40-6 at one point, before the Chiefs scored two touchdowns in the last 3 minutes of the game, making the game seem closer with a final score of 40-22, although it was over a long time before. The Eagles pulled their starting Quarterback Jalen Hurts with 3 minutes left, letting backup QB Kenny Pickett finish the game out.
The Super Bowl 59 MVP ended up going to Jalen Hurts, who also got his first Super Bowl win with this victory. The game was celebrated heavily in Philadelphia, and they are the favorites to win the Super Bowl again next year, in 2026.
