This fall, PennWest Cal Theater will take viewers on a journey to the beloved underwater world, bringing Bikini Bottom to life in Steele Hall. This weekend, the PennWest California Theater Department invites all students and families to attend The SpongeBob Musical for a family-friendly production that combines humor and a celebration of friendship, unity, and the power of optimism.
A vibrant adaptation of the cherished animated TV series, The SpongeBob Musical follows SpongeBob and his friends as they attempt to save Bikini Bottom from impending disaster.
Senior Quenten Zboyovsky plays the role of Sheldon J. Plankton. Zboyovsky expressed that the musical guarantees a vibrant, high-energy show filled with colorful sets, catchy music from various artists, and a heartfelt story about optimism, resilience, and friendship. He also remarked on his positive experience with the cast.
“It’s been a bit emotional wrapping up these final moments with the friends I’ve made over the last few years,” said Zboyovsky. “This group of people just seems to click with one another. It makes the entire performance process easier when you get along with those around you.”
Senior Eddie Guadalupe, who takes on the lead role of SpongeBob SquarePants in the musical, shared that his experience working with the cast and crew was incredibly fulfilling. He expressed how the talent, dedication, and passion of everyone involved made him always feel supported and inspired throughout the production.
“Everyone contributed to such a wonderful experience and end product, and I feel so lucky to be a part of it,” Guadalupe said. “The joy was the main feeling we aimed to elicit since the first day of rehearsals. The contagious energy and strong sense of community is what sets this show apart from others—to me.”
The SpongeBob Musical will take place in Steele Hall on Nov. 22-23 at 7 p.m. and Nov. 23-24 at 2 p.m. Students will receive free admission with their PennWest ID. Outside tickets cost $12 for adults and $8 for seniors and children.
“I think this is a show that’s entertaining to anyone, even if you’re not a ‘theater person,'” said Guadalupe. “Especially since a lot of us were raised watching it on Nickelodeon. PennWest Theater welcomes anyone and everyone to experience the joy of Bikini Bottom with us this weekend.”
