On Wednesday, Nov. 13, the Vulcans faced the Penn State-Fayette Lions, coming out on top 115-76. The matchup between the two teams is more of a friendly crosstown rivalry, as the Penn-State Fayette Lions are essentially two divisions below the Vulcans. Nonetheless, California is in midseason form—now 3-0 to start the season, showing why they were ranked no. 6 nationally in the coaches’ preseason poll.
From start to end, control was in the hands of the Vulcans, racking up 53 and 62 in the first and second half, respectively. This game style, early in the season, allowed Coach Sancomb to mix in new players and experiment with playstyles that wouldn’t normally be appropriate during the start of conference play.
A large list of Vulcans scored in this game, and each contributed in their own way, but the most notable consist of the forward Keith Palek III who had 25 points and 8 rebounds, and Dalman Alexander with 14 points and 10 rebounds. We also got to see some transfers and freshman contributors such as Keondre DeShields, the transfer from St. Francis football, who put up 14 points off the bench.
Fayette, a dynamic team, still finding their footing for the season, had the most help from Dasilas “SI” Jones and Jesse Lawson Jr. Jones dropped 20 points on 9-19 shooting from the field. Lawson had 10 points and 3 rebounds. Both rather young teams hope to have strong seasons in their respective leagues.
On Saturday, Nov. 16, the Vulcans take on Concord at home, and on Nov. 19, they are home against Lincoln. Come support the men’s basketball team this year as they look to be atop the PSAC West!
