On Oct. 19, the California Vulcans hosted No.6 Slippery Rock. The Vulcans defeated the Rock 28-7 dominantly and now hold the top spot in PSAC West. California was able to snap a six-game losing streak against the Rock, and this was its first win over a top-10 nationally ranked team since the 2000 season.
The game showed Cal’s total domination on both sides of the ball over SRU. California had 405 yards of offense, 250 yards through the air on 16-26 attempts from Davis Black, and 155 yards on the ground with a complementary offense. Cal held the ball for 39:10 time of possession compared to the Rock’s 20:50 time of possession. The Vulcans’ defense imposed its will on the SRU offense, stopping them from converting all their third downs, going 0-8 in attempts and 1-3 in fourth down attempts. SRU could not get the run going through the Vulcan’s defense, only rushing for ten yards and relying solely on the pass for 282 yards from Brayden Long.
Two Vulcans have been awarded for their play, receiving Player of the Week from the PSAC: Dominic Solomon Jr. for Defensive Athlete of the Week and Anthony Beitko for Special Teams Athlete of the Week. Eric Willis III also posted a game-high 106 receiving yards on just five catches, including a 65-yard touchdown.
California is now ranked 25th in the nation and looks to build on this momentum at home as it faces its rivals, the IUP Crimson Hawks, for the 15th Coal Bowl on Oct. 26th at noon.
