On Saturday, Oct. 5, the California Vulcans took on the Clarion Golden Eagles and were able to overcome 31-27. The Golden Eagles are now 2-4, and the Vulcans are 4-1. Given the history between these two schools, many expected California to take the game and run away with it. Historically, these teams have faced off against each other 18 times, all of which the Vulcans had won.
California was held to three points in the first half alone while Clarion scored 14. The matchup between Davis Black and Anthony Guercio made for an interesting duel, and the strong defensive front of the Golden Eagles forced the Vulcans to rely on the pass. Black and the offense of the Vulcans made up a total of 477 yards, with 422 yards in the air, Black going 31 of 46, and 55 yards on the ground—a wildly surprising number, as California and coach Dunn have made it a point to be flexible on the ground and in the air. Guercio went 10 of 19 for 209 passing yards, and Clarion had 207 rushing yards for 416 total yards.
Two Vulcans garnered player of the week attention, with Davis Black West as offensive athlete of the week, and Clayton Rosensteel West as special teams athlete of the week. Rosensteel set his personal record with a punt of 57 yards. California looks to continue their win streak as they face Seton Hill on Oct. 12, the homecoming matchup on Oct. 19 against Slippery Rock, and on Oct. 26, the 15th Coal Bowl against the IUP Crimson Hawk.
