On Sept. 28, the California Vulcans went head-to-head against the Gannon Golden Knights, and California came up with a runaway victory at 49-7. This victory marks the 13th win in program history against the Golden Knights.
The game produced a host of team and individual highs on the season for the Vulcans. Individually, those include passing yards (Black, 297), pass completions (Black, 23), touchdown passes (Black, 4), and receptions (Willis III, 7). Team highs include yards per pass (10.6), total offense (485 yards), and points.
Gannon now sits at a 0-4 record, but the record does not translate to their skill. The previous games for the Golden Knights were against one ranked opponent and teams that had ended winning seasons. The early season is a faux predictor of how a team will end their season. The correct mindset to have going into any season is that any team can stand on top, which is the mindset that head coach Gary Dunn lives by—especially for the start of the season, as many teams have gained and lost key players.
California travels to Clarion on Oct. 5 and to Seton Hill on Oct. 12 for a quick two-away game stretch where they will look to finish strong before they play their remainder of home games.
