On Sept. 21, 2024, The California Vulcans came out on top with 27-20 in a close-up match with the Lock Haven Bald Eagles. The Vulcans’ record now stands at 2-1 overall.
California, led by Davis Black, had 113 rushing yards on 39 carries and 202 receiving yards on 14 of 23 passes. Lock Haven’s Ostrowski threw 346 yards on 24 0f 45 pass attempts. The Bald Eagles are a normally pass-heavy team, as they lead PSAC in Average Passing Yards Per Game. The anticipation by both teams was evident at the start of the game. Due to a miscommunication by Lock Haven, the first drive on the first play by the Vulcans led to an 83-yard touchdown pass.
Don’t let the mistake that began the game dictate your opinion, though, as the Bald Eagles, a solid team out of the east, also put together a string of highlights. Both teams scored back and forth throughout the entirety of the game, but the competitiveness of the game was to be expected. Head coach, Gary Dunn, mentioned the strong ability of the Lock Haven team, their quarterback, and how closely their weapons mimicked California—both offense and defense.
A testament to Lock Haven’s defensive prowess is the fact that they only allowed 14 points a game in the first two weeks of play, which is a solid feat by any team. After the game, we were able to catch up with Eric McKan III, who had a wonderful last season, and Keith Charney, the DB, who did his part and more against the Bald Eagles.
“This was our third straight-away game and we wanted to finish off strong before we head to western play.” Mckan III said.
The common theme, “us,” continued with Charney.
“Heading into this game, we didn’t try to think about them. We tried to think about us. If we could stay humble and do what we need to do, everything would fall into place,” said Charney.
The Vulcans keep their heads high as they go on to face the Gannon Golden Knights for their home opener. That game will be held on Sept. 28 at 12:00 PM, the next two matchups for the team include Clarion Oct. 5th at Clarion, and away at Seton Hill on Oct. 12.
