On Sept. 5, the Vulcans in their season opener, favored to be fifth in the PSAC West this year, tied with the Wheeling Cardinals 1-1. With the Vulcans down in the first half of the game, they were able to tie the game in a joint effort in the second half. All things considered, it was a good start to California’s season.
Last season, the Vulcans finished towards the bottom of the PSAC west with a record 4-13-1, which was a win percentage of 25%. That number has been similar in the last five years of this program, so the Vulcans are looking to change their luck this upcoming season.
Putting together a winning team is no easy task, but Emedin Sabic is looking to tackle this issue in his 12th year as a head coach at California. California’s next opponent is D’youville University, and they face off on Sep 10. They head into PSAC play on Sunday, Sept. 15 against Lock Haven. On Sept. 18, they go head to head against West Liberty.
One thing to note about this young Vulcan team is their passiveness. Most teams that the Vulcans face have the ball the majority of the time, which keeps them on their heels and doesn’t allow too much room to score on offense. With about eight minutes left in this game, Wheeling lost a player due to a red card. Even though they were down a player, they retained possession close to halftime, giving their goalie plenty of space to make any plays. Overall, it was not a bad showing by the California team in the first game of the season. As they continue to play, we wish them the best of luck!
