On, Wednesday, Feb. 28, the California Vulcans went against the IUP Crimson Hawks and won a nail-biter, with a final score 61-60. The Vulcans continue to put together back-to-back wins, and this win extended their streak to 6 games. Their record now sits at 20-7 overall, and 15-6 in conference.
The matchup between these teams was every bit as competitive as one would hope. California was outscored in the first half of the game, unable to do much against the offense of the Crimson Hawks.
California started the second half with a fire that has not been seen all season, down as much as 16 points, they came back and scored 42 to IUP’s 26. The Vulcans were led by the inside forces of Dejah Terrell and Allycia Harris.
Terrell had 25 points, 11 rebounds, 2 steals, 3 assists, and 2 blocks. While being the leading scorer on the team, Terrell hit 1,000 career points, making her the 29th player in school history to do so.
Allycia Harris also had quite the night as she finished with 22 points, 9 rebounds, and 2 assists. Both Harris and Terrell were the only players to score in double figures.
The leading contributors for the Crimson Hawks were Mario Cerro and Nyshae Weaver, Cerro had 17 points, 5 rebounds, 5 assists, and 4 steals, and Weaver finished with 13 points and 12 rebounds. California as a team shot 27-69 (39.1%) from the field and 2-13 (15.4%) from three-point range. IUP shot 22-47 (46.8%) from the floor and 2-11 (18.2%) from deep.
During the last week of the regular season, the Vulcans will go on to face the Edinboro Fighting Scots this Saturday, Mar. 2. The matchup, an important one as both are playing for playoff seeding, California currently is 3rd in the PSAC West with Edinboro right behind them in 4th. Both teams will look to improve both their record and seeding in preparation for the playoffs.
