Wednesday, Feb. 7 the California Vulcans took on the Griffins of Seton Hill, with California taking a decisive victory with a final score of 78-69. Coming into the game, both teams were tied for 5th in the PSAC West. The win moves the Vulcans to 4th place, now tied with the Edinboro Fighting Scots. The Griffins fall to 6th place and are tied with the Mountain Cats of Pitt-Johnstown. A decent offensive showing by both teams, California shot 28-61 (45.9%) from the field, and Seton Hill 25-53 (47.2%). Seton Hill’s 1000-point scorer, Christiane Frye, finished the night with 22 points, 4 rebounds, 3 steals, and 3 assists before fouling out in the 4th quarter.
The Vulcan were led in scoring by Senior Dejah Terrell who finished the night with a season-high 36 points, 13 rebounds, and 3 steals. “I told myself that I have to be better than last game and do everything in my power to win, ” Terrell said. A top-12 scorer in the PSAC, she has been a consistent presence for the California Vulcans averaging 15.2 points per game. In addition, she also set a season-high in minutes played as she was on the floor the whole game. “It felt pretty good that coach trusted me enough, and that I was even healthy enough to stay on, I’m proud of that.”
Looking ahead as we are in the last month of the season, California will face the Rock of Slippery Rock on Saturday, Feb. 10. The Vulcans will host the Clarion Golden Eagles on Wednesday, Feb. 14, and are away Saturday, Feb. 21 at Pitt-Johnstown to face the Mountain Cats. Every game left will be crucial for the Vulcans, as they jockey for a playoff spot against the likes of Edinboro, Pitt-Johnstown, Seton Hill, and Mercyhurst.
