On Saturday, September 9th, Vulcans Women Soccer lost 2-0 to the Fighting Scots from Edinboro at the Phillipsburg Soccer Facility in California, PA.
The match started in a progressive 4-3-3, with Christyana Sims merging midfield duo of Lorina Romeis and Reagan Bromiley with the front three of Ashely Venezia, Veronica Waruenk, and Meia Haakansson. Hannah Morton and Katey Berns backboned the formation with the assistance of their flanks, Caelin Thomas and Izabella DeGlopper. Rounding out the team sheet, reigning PSAC West Defensive Athlete of the Week, Emily Ouimet maintained her spot in goal.
Unfortunately for the Vulcans, the Fighting Scots made their namesake proud. Edinboro forward Devin Keidel posted up both Morton and Berns, and the wingers fed off Keidel’s strength.
The two teams tattooed each other with bruising fouls. Edinboro, lacking the technical superiority of California, seasoned the field with panic and chaos.
Edinboro decided the match with two individual goals. Edinboro forward Reece Enochs, under heavy pressure from Vulcan defender Hailey Kaschak, rocketed a crowd-silencing goal from the 18-yard box’s far corner over the vaulting Ouimet in the 28th minute.
The Fighting Scots’ midfielder Emily Vogel put the Vulcans to bed in the 51st minute. Receiving a simple pass from teammate Megan Malits on the Vulcans right flank, Vogel shimmied left, then right, creating a bubble of space as she drove into the box. The sophomore finished off her solo endeavor with a decisive goal into the net’s left paneling.
In the following ten minutes, the Vulcans dominated the game, pushing for their elusive pride-saving goal. Whipping passes to each other in the opposition’s half, the Vulcans settled into their potential. Junior attacking-midfielder Adriana Marina fired a shot over the net in the 65th minute. Waruenk, Wilkins, and Gilberto all almost scored off a Vulcan free kick in the 73rd minute. Despite all their knocking, the goal never welcomed in the Vulcans.
The Vulcans fall to 0-1 in the PSAC Western Conference play. The Vulcans women hosted another conference opponent, Seton Hill (1-2), on Wednesday, Sept. 13 at 7:30 p.m. with a tie score of 1-1.
